Alex Karagrigoriou studied at the University of Patras, Greece and the University of Maryland, USA (MA & Ph.D, 1992). He has worked at the University of Maryland, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Institute of Statistical Sciences, Taiwan and taught at the Universities of Maryland, Athens, Aegean, and Cyprus. He is currently Professor of Probability and Statistics in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial-Financial Mathematics of the University of the Aegean, Greece and Adjunct Professor at Hellenic Open University.
His research activities cover various areas of Statistics such as Statistical Modeling, Model Selection Criteria, Biostatistics, Medical Statistics, Information Theory, Time Series Analysis, Goodness of fit tests, Economic Demography and Reliability Theory. He has published more than 50 articles and has given more that 30 invited presentations in international conferences, symposia, and universities all over the world. He has published jointly with I. Vonta (National Technical University of Athens) the textbook (in Greek) Applied Statistical Analysis and Elements of Probability (Εφαρμοσμένη Στατιστική Ανάλυση & Στοιχεία Πιθανοτήτων), 2015 revised edition, Paraskinio publ, Athens & edited jointly 9 books (a) with Frenkel, Lisnianski & Kleyner the collective volume Applied Reliability Engineering and Risk Analysis: Probabilistic Models and Statistical Inference (2013), Wiley, New York (b) with Oliveira and Skiadas the collective volume Statistical, Stochastic and Data Analysis Methods and Applications (2016) ISAST: International Society for the Advancement of Science and Technology, ISBN: 978-618-5180-07-2, e-ISBN: 978-618-5180-09-6 and (c) with Lisnianski and Frenkel the collective volume Recent Advances in Multi-state Systems Reliability (2018), Springer, Berlin and (d) 6 collective volumes on Data Analysis (2020 (2), 2021 (2) and 2022 (2)), iSTE Wiley.
Dr. Karagrigoriou has great experience in the design and execution of research projects which involve statistical analysis of medical, biomedical, socioeconomic and economic data and has been involved in a number of research programs with external funding over the last 15 years. He was the Principal Scientific and Financial Investigator of research projects on The adaptability of the Cyprus Public Sector on the operating challenges of the European Union funded by the Cyprus Government (2002-2003) and on Cypriot Household Portfolios funded by the Central Bank of Cyprus (1997-2007). He has also been involved as Statistical Investigator on various medical research programs funded by the National Science Foundation of Cyprus and the European Union.
